After reading this article, I came to a thought that this show is not a good influence on today's teenage society. This is just my opinion but others may think differently. I'm curious of what other people might think about this show and other MTV shows. It seems MTV shows get more pointless by the year, especially Jersey Shore!
Too much is going on in society and by advertising teenage pregnancy/drinking/ and other shameful content, we are not going to mark a revelation to these issues.
Any thoughts ? ![]()
I think the show was originally intended to help prevent teen pregnancy. However, for some, it has become a reality tv show. I also think they are straying away from the point of the show when it was originally created. When you stated that "....this show is not a good influence on today's teenage society" I completely agree! Some would look at the show and say, "I want to be like her one day". That's definitely not something that should be promoted (no offense to anyone of course).
I agree Steph! Also, with the recent news of the girl on the show abusing her boyfriend, that's a shame. She should set an example for her child and other teenagers. Now she is pregnant with a second baby, she better think good and hard about her life goals and what's her purpose in life.
I completely agree
My Wife loves teen mom, my wife and I started dating when I was 16 and she was 15 not long after we started dating she got pregnant so she seems to be able to relate. I hate teen mom because it seems way to scripted to me they seem to only pick the girls who have deadbeat boyfriends for one and they always complain that they need money and I know for a fact MTV pays them to be on the show and i'm sure they are well compensated for their time. I see those girls on US Weekly and other popular magazines and they get paid for that too, I highly doubt those girls are hurting for money. I really don't like that show. If you want reality TV give a guy or woman who has a family and has been laid off due to the economy in this country a camera and no compensation and let them show how hard life can really be.
these girls couldnt get paid too great, and they are teen parents, they usually cant have full time jobs, think about how much a baby or maybe even twins would cost. Not to mention having to find a house, a car, insurance for the car, bills, baby supplies, food for the parents, some have school tuition to pay, and i'm sure most of them have hospital bills, and they dont get paid until the show is done.
Are you serious?? Amber is prego again? She cant handle the one she has!
I dissagree 100% Teen mom is my favorite show, even though im just 15 and dont have any children of my own i love watching all of the obsticles they face when raising a child at an young age. All though some stuff is innapropriate teen moms are people too and deserve respect on raising a child or choosing adoption. And if teenagers dont wanna get knocked up they should use the pill or protection. But mistakes happen. And every baby is Gods blessing!!
I agree. But I'm WAS addicted to the show. I used to watch it endlessly. Then I realised it was a bad influence on teens.
I watched Teen Mom, because I watched those girls on 16 & Pregnant and the whole reason I watched that show was because I had a baby when I was a teenager and even though the show was on mtv, I wanted to see how other young mothers dealt with raising a baby. Situations like Amber and Gary's happen everyday, all around the world except they aren't televised. It's a sad reality. Maybe the show made her worse, but from the start...that girl had major issues. I think there are some young girls out there who will watch that show and think, "well all I have to do is get pregnant and mtv will pay to follow me around." but I think the majority of the people who watch that show really do see the harsh reality of it all. Trying to go to school, having a "dead beat" partner, trying to maintain a social life, pay bills and take care of a baby is a daunting task. Luckily my situtation was NOTHING like any of those girls. ![]()
I saw your baby in your pictures, adorable! Yeah I completely agree with you. They need to just end the show or choose some teenagers who can lead a better example for our society.
Thanks!
No Problem :-)
Hi everyone ![]()
If anything the show is not real enough, most of my friends have children and that show makes everything seem fine and okay. I do not agree with her behavior but thats more real, everyone on the show should be struggling trying to balance school, work, finances, and their social life because that represents more teen moms than the easy life they are showing....just my opinion
Yeah I agree with you! They should show the struggle but they should also show happiness, success, and love between the mother and her family.
Also, Jazzmine, don't forget to join the high school group. Go to "Groups" and find the high school group. Then on the right side where it says "actions" click on join group; so you can communicate with other high school students like myself.
I have only seen the show a couple of times. I think the scary part of this show is, it does not always portray the realistic parts of being a single parent. TV can only capture bits and pieces of the struggles of being a parent. Yes, there are going to be some teens that find this captivating and want to be like those girls, but I would hope that a TV show would not be a young girls deciding factor in becoming a teen mom. Being a parent is tough enough without the stress of being a teenager. If anything positive comes out of this show, I hope that it opens up a much needed dialogue between kids and their parents.
I agree Danny. I think they just need to re-create the whole show and make a better representation for themselves and for society.
It is a HOT MESS
Carlos, that sums up this whole discussion haha
Anthony, you are so right
just found this!
http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/12/15/mtv-announces-new-teen-mom-cast/
Just more and more drama! But it does seem like the show has been upgraded in a way but not really. Any takes?
I think that 16 and Pregnant was intended to educate about teen pregnancy and then they got into trouble with the teen mom spinoff. MTV just wants to capitalize and make money off of these situations. The problem I have with it is what are they actually doing to help these teens become better parents or improve their situations? Also, someone will watch it and glamorize it and say hey Amber and Farrah got paid to be a parent maybe I can too! Thats the sort of thinking we need to stay away from.
On that note there is one MTV series I like called true life. None of the people gets spinoffs and it shows an accurate portrayal of different life situations people may be facing. Jersey Shore is an absolute abomination to tv but most reality shows are actually. All Jersey Shore portrays is public drunkeness and promiscuity which is a negative message.
With that being said parents needs to control what they children and ESPECIALLY their teenagers watch.
I agree Theresa! They shouldn't even get paid for portraying "reality", they should have done it on free will.
Jersey Shore is a disgrace, agreed. Like I said MTV shows are getting more abnormal! I do like True Life! That's one of my favorites, I also like the new show "If You Really Knew Me" It attemps to help students look past stereotypes. We need more shows like that!
We really do. Im 28 no kids and have no desire to get pregnant anytime soon. I want kids once im married and able to take care of them. Society glamorizes bs and it is up to us to take a stand> I refuse to watch teen mom and especially Jersey Shore. I was dying when I heard Snooki got arrested for public drunkeness. Its like how can you become a celebrity for being a drunken promiscous person? We need to redefine celebrity because anyone can become one these days
I completely agree. I am no one to judge Snooki but the way she carries herself gives a person no other option than to JUDGE! That's right, we are refusing to watch these idiotic shows! Everyone should follow our lead.
I guarantee you if no one watched it the shows would be canceled due to ratings. The problem is too many people buy into the glamorization of this crap and wonders why the world is going to pot lol. I watch judge shows (people are always acting a hot mess on them lol but I learn a lot from them) and sports. Other than that tv doesnt hold much attention for me
Lol yeah true that. TV has definitely changed since the 90s and even the 80s. Well cheers to the hope of the future and better television!
We hold more power than we think... If we dont watch the crap will get canceled... BTW I dont hate Snooki I feel sad for her and disgusted..
Yeah I know, wish I could do something that could make an impact on ending these shows for the sake of the people in it and society.
You can by spreading the word on the negative impact of these shows! Most people dont think about the effects that this stuff does have on our society
We gotta work to make our society an informed society!
Yeah true that!! Sometimes it's just hard to encourage people to stop watching these shows. As they say, their "hard headed"!
Its not our job to tell people what to watch, but we can educate them and let them make their own decisions... Man im addicted to this community site its positive and fun to chat on! Thanks for letting me know about it!
that's true, you always know what to say lol! No problem, well I'm heading to bed, my eyes are closing. Good night :-)
Good nite!
I so agree. It defiantly sets a bad image for young teens. I know a girl who wanted to get pregnant, and ended up getting pregnant, wanting to be like the teens on teen mom... It's so sad!
My personal opinion, i cant stand the show teen mom. I got pregnant when i was 14 years old, and had my daughter at 15. Im not gonna lie, it is a lot harder to be a teen mom, but those girls on the show complain about everything, "o my boyfreind doesnt want to be with me anymore." So what? my daughter's father left me a month after i had her, his mom takes care of her on the weekends, but why does it matter if the father leaves the mother, ya it sometimes puts stress on the children, but some of those moms on there, arent really worried about how it affects the kids, they aare just worried about the heart break and being embarrased on tv. I really dislike that show, they put off bad ways about how teen moms are, and not all teen moms are like that. I am 17 years old and, my daughter is 2, she has a wonderful life, ive made many sacrafices to make her happy, and im glad i did, before i got pregnant, i was a really bad child, i honestly think, if i didnt get pregnant, that i would not be alive right now, because of bad choices i was making. My daughter has completley changed my life for the better, im more mature now, i look at things in a different way. its just really hard to explain, but i wouldnt change having her. I love her with all my heart, and she is what makes my life worth it.
You have a very good point on that..Now I I'm not the only one that thinks that!
well have a good day!![]()
I will admit i watch it all the time and im 32 years old. They make mother hood look easy
yeah i know and it's suppose to be a "reality show". It definitely doesn't portray everything 100% real.
I dont believe it is all real
True that!
This feedback is interesting
I did not watch it. I tuned in here and there. And saw the finale. But other than that, I did not want to watch it.... I myself was a teen mom. I had gotten pregnant right after i turned 17, and had my son a month and a half before my 18th bday. (aug 27). I went to prom pregnant - about 7 mos. Graduated at 8 mos.... I didn't punk out and get home schooled or get my GED. I wanted my actual diploma. My friends were there to support and help me. I was able to leave my classes 5 min earlier so that I can waddle my way up or down the stairs (afraid of the elevator we had) before all the other kids were out of the classrooms. I wouldn't trade it for a thing. made me grow up... However, doesn't mean that I want to watch other kids going through it. I would maybe mentor someone. But no. I am not with my sons "father" and he has no part in our life. I am married to a wonderful man who takes my son as his own. Hes all my son has ever known - well, since he was like 2 months. Very grateful for how my situation has turned out so far, and I hate to see the struggles that I could have had.
I like your story jennifer! When your kids grow older, you can definitely share it with them, instead of watching this abnormal show lol.
I'm with you on this one Jennifer, I also watch the show because Im a teen mother and I want to see how others dealt with there situation. In a way I feel like that some girls will look at the show and feel like they can get fame for gettin pregant, and some will look at it an see all the problems an will reconsider it. This is something that happen almost everyday now. Every since I had my baby I try to talk to other young girls and let them know how hard it is. But im very thankful that my situation isn't like some of the other teen mother.
I watched 16 and pregnant this weekend, and could not believe the stuff that I saw. These girls thought it was a big joke. They would curse their own mother's out, laugh about it like it was a cold they caught, and glamorize it. The sad thing was a lot of their girlfriends would come over or meet them at a restaurant, all made up like they were on The Hills, just to be on the show. They didn't offer their pregnant friend any good advise, they just laugh or said, "uh huh....I know right." The one that really touched me was the mom that gave her baby up for adoption. I looked at my little ones, and thought about how hard that would be to do.
I really dont like the way that they talh to their mother. When it all came down to it the mom was the only one there through the whole thing. I never treated my mom like they do theirs. My mom was my other half through it all and still til ths day she there for me. Its crazy how some girls are growing up to be. An I could never give my baby up for adoption I feel like I was grown enough to make it I should be grown enough to take care of it. An grown enough to deal with the problems that come along with having a baby.
I have seen a lot of this happening on these shows.
I can relate to the show Teen Mom..i mostly relate to tyler and catelynn because i was a teen mom at 16 but decided to place my baby for adoption.i was doing what was best for him..i couldnt raise a baby and go to schooll..and i really didnt have alot of support..but with them continue to make shows of this other teens are going to think it is okay to get pregnant,.it should of stopped at the first one..
The show most definately is not encourging girls to get pregnant, its trying to show them what teen moms go through. I am a teen mom. I got pregnant at 15 and had my daughter the day after my 16th birthday, she is my life.. But as for who ever thinks this is scripted out and fake. I highly doubt it is, because what they go through is the exact same things I go through every day. I was mistreated very bad by my babys father, but I tried to make it work for my daughter. But he left me and her shortly after I had her. So now I am a 16 year old single parent, trying to finish highshcool, with very little money, no help from the other parent and things that happen to these girls is not fake. Its HARD. But I wouldnt change having my daughter, she really made me grow up. I may have a baby at 16 but it does not make me a bad person, things happen. I really think this show is a great idea because if it wasnt for this show teen girls wouldnt have an education of what it would like to get pregnant at a really young age. I always thought, oh i wont be one of those girls, but I am because no one warned me or really tried to get through to me that yes it can happen and if your not careful IT WILL happen. It most definately is a struggle. I am very thankful I was blessed with a healthy 9lb 5.6oz happy babygirl. I may not be with her father, but I do have the support of my boyfriend who has been here since she was only a few months old.. I hope teen girls do watch this and realize, wow its not fun or easy. Its very stressful, hard, tiring, and its not a easy thing to go through at all. But with all that said, I love my daughter to death and would not give her up for the world, she is worth the struggles. (:
Elizabeth
I have to commend you because im 28 with no kids and im not ready for kids lol. Also you have the right attitude towards the show. Some teens will look at it and say I want to emulate her and have a baby young. It can educate but it does glamorize teen pregnancy in my opinion. To be honest with you, it is your ex's loss because he is missing out on a beautiful baby girl
Thanks fo rsharing your experience
I didnt really want kids either, until I had my riley (:
But thanks to you also, she is my life, and yes he really is missing out because she is just an amazing child. I have to agree, sometimes it does tend to glamorize it, but sometimes it does show real struggles, like the ones who end up having babies with health problems. I believe I really came out lucky. I really just like the show because if I had been watching it maybe I could have been more careful, and I really like the thought of other young girls atleast getting a glimpse of how hard things are to have a baby at such a young age. Because at first you think, well this will be okay me and my babies daddy will stay together, get married and live happily ever after. But that sadly is usually not how it ends, the father gets abusive or decides he's not ready for the child, so he'll just leave you to deal with it. But I do have to say the girls on teen mom may glamorize it but atleast someone is trying to educate these girls, and thank you for commenting on how my daughter is beautiful (: I think so also!! lol
And sometimes you have mothers who arent the greatest parents like Janelle and Amber. I just think it tends to glamorize teen pregnancy and it sucks because teen pregnancy is actually on the rise these days. I would not mind if there was a show that could scare these teens straight and didnt glamorize it at all. But see you are smart and you think so when you watch it you can get some good from teen mom. Some teens look at it like wow these girls are getting paid to be on tv. I think Amber makes over $200,000 a season and theyre like i she can do it then I can too but in the end the children arethe ones who suffer..
Yeah, I totally agree. It really is on the rise. In my highschool before I left I know there was well over 50 or 60 other pregnant teens, not to count the teen moms, and there were quite a few of those also and the school population was 2,000. Alot of them stayed there, but I just really felt that it was better for me to stop public school, really for my saftey and for the sake of my baby because I didnt want to be away from her 6 or 7 hours a day 5 days a week. I know I may be a teen mom and have made the same mistakes as alot of other girls, but I think alot of it is carelessness. Thats what happened to me, I was a good girl, made good grades and everything and thought it wouldnt happen to me. But it did. Amber and Janelle are the ones that give teen moms a bad name. I think people are influenced by what they see if them, because I've seen amber beat gary and janelle smokes pot, so I think alot of people think alot of teen moms are like that, and which quite a few are. I think alot of the girls see what they are doing and think well I run around wild right now, if I get drunk and get pregnant I'll just throw my kid off on my parents after i have it and I'll go party and the teen moms like that just make me sick honestly. If they cant take responsiblity for what they make they dont need to be doing the things that will cause them to have a child. I wish schools and tv would make more of an effort to educate teenagers. Boys and Girls.
Elizabeth
I agree! I wish tv would show more examples of teen moms like you who are responsible and are trying to do the right thing for their child(ren). There are a lot of stereotypes out there and its up to us to fight through and educate others. I admire you for putting your child first. There are a lot of moms who are a lot older than you that I see on Steve Wilkos show all of the time either abusing or choosing their men over their children.. If you need help with any of classes I would be glad to help ![]()
Okay, I will make sure to keep that in mind lol Right now I'm waiting on my next course to come.
But I know what you mean, I love my boyfriend, but I could never put him before my daughter, and even he knows that, which really he is more of a dad to my daughter then her real father will ever be. He never has anything to do with her and the bad thing is he is 19 and I'm just fixing to be 17. Parents like him are the ones that are the bad examples, and I wish they could show more girls that, that is what they could be stuck with even though you may think a guy loves you when you get pregnant they usually disappear or slowly just fade from your life, I really hope someone gets through to all these teenage girls who may think it is easy or fun, because it is not easy in anyway, and the only fun part of being a teen mom is getting to see some of the things that my little girl does, you have to give up alot, but I'm just glad I just happened to be able to mature and grow up enough to actually atleast try to be a good teen mom, I put Riley first no matter what and yes sometimes it is hard, because technically yes I'm sixteen so I am still a kid, but then I look at her and know theres no way I could put myself before her, but some girls, it wouldnt bother them.
Right like I said youre mature enough to realize your responsibilities and im sure Riley will appreciate having a loving caring mother as she grows up. They also dont realize when they act out of control that when they have these children that they will be teenagers one day themselves and do they want them to act the way they did?
i think teen mom doesnt show the whole situation. im 18 and have two kids and it is way harder than what teen mom shows. they dont show waking up at 1 2 3 4 5 in the morning. you have to have a job to support your child borrowing money from mom or dad doesnt cut it. partying is NOT being a mother. being a mother is a full time job you dont get breaks or get to go to the store alone. and teen mom is not showing that. our parents have their own lives to tend they cant take off of their life to watch our children. i think teens that watch teen mom are influenced to go out and get pregnant so they can be on the show cause they think its "COOL TO BE PREGNANT" but if they knew how hard it was to care and love a child they would think twice of what they are doing.
I agree 100% Kayla.
I agree most times once they realize how hard it is to raise a child they end up passing their child off on their parents. Their parents should get a backbone and say I didnt decide to have this child and make them take responsibility.
I like this show, but do not feel it shows exactly what it is like. They show parts of it, but not the entire struggles. This season they are doing alot better to show that. However, I got pregnant at 15 and had my daughter at 16. She was 6 1/2 weeks early. They do not show too much of those babies that have to stay in the nicu for a few days to a few months and how those mothers handle that. There is so much they don't show that I wish the would have.
Personaly, I think that all the "reality" shows are retarded. I used to watch MTV as a child when it was exactaly that, Music Television. It is now full of stupid shows that like you said, promote bad ideas and influences on the younger population. I think that MTV needs to change their name so someone more interested in music can make MTV again Music Television. I have watched an episode of a few shows they have on there, and they doo seem pointless. I never understood how "reality" has anything to do with a bunch of people that are thrown into a place and monitered with a bunch of people they don't know. Half of the time it seems as if the shows are scripted anyway.
~Tyler
I hate all MTV shows. Call me biased, you would be correct.
i love teen mom and 16 and pregnant it lets u fallow the real life of struggaling people who try to make it in the outside world and many people take that for granted but it is a life changing show that makes many people think =)
this is what wrong with america there too much garbage on tv i hate mtv and all reality like that
All Mtv is about is exploitative needs for ratings and money for themselves which they could use for the actual mothers to help them with their own struggles.
I don't think that they should glorify teen pregnancy or the drama associated with that show. They should have shows about kids going to college and making a difference in society.
I do watch the show and have watched It since It started. but when It comes to Amber Portwood, I think her behavior Is absolutely ridiculous...I mean first shes abusive and gets thrown In jail, then shes losing her daughter, shes found trying to kill herself with a rope around her neck, and now shes pregnant again?. I don't know who would portray her as a good mother, but Its definitely not me.
The show can have negative affect on adolescents. but also I think stories like Catelynn and Tyler's are something teens should listen to. because we all know how many naive teenagers out there who want to have kids when they are only kids themselves, and they dont look at what their children would be raised around. Catelynn and Tyler knew what their childs life would be like growing up In their household. so they made a very brave decision to give their baby up for adoption.
And now they are schooling other teenagers about their story In hopes they make better decisions than they did from the start.
In my own opinion i think teen mom and 16 and pregnant is exploitative they have had many problems with money and with their children and the show didn't even help to pay them money to help them out just to get rateings thats why i dont like MTV its all about rateings and money for them. I mean yeah it teaches to not get pregnant but the base line is the matter is parents should teach their own children to not get pregnant and to show them what will happen not an exploitative show.
But please if this opinion angers you please do not get angry :\ its an opinion i can have it if i want it thank you for respecting that.
I personally dont like the show being as I have a teenage daughter most of the time I see the mom's on the shows taking over the situation like when the girls want to go with their friends some where. I personally think they should take all shows like this off the air what is it really teaching kids now days. I personally got pregnant when I was 16 and it was hard I had to quit school and get a job to support me an my baby. I think that most of these girls on this show are spoiled and looking for attention. Definitely the parents should have been paying more attention to their girls. I dont think I would have wanted anyone to know the struggles I dealt with at being 16 and pregnant I know that now I am struggling because I have went back to school finally to get my education and it took me 16 years.
I've seen the show and I don't enjoy watching it but sometimes I can't help but watch. The show's concept is fine with me. I feel teens need to see what they are getting into when having a baby at a young age . The characters on the other hand are extremly annoying.
I do Watch Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant...I am not a Teen mom but I do understand Ya'll's Points...I think its educational but I don't think they show all of the Struggles these Teen Moms Face Today..I think alot of Teens will think Its cool to Become Pregnant because you could get on a show like this....I think MTV had the Right idea in Mind for the Show but I think I got out of hand Awhole Lot...and Honestly I watch the Show because I like the Babies Not the Teen Mom's...
Well I think their is pros & cons to the show. I do watch teen mom & 16 & preg. But I see the point in why they created the show. It is sappoused to teach teens & young adults that parenthood is alot harder than it looks or sounds. But I also think that because it is a show I think it might make kids want to get preg. to try to be on the show. I personaly like the show. I am 18 & it has made me want to wait till I have the means & am ready to parent. Also it has showed me that I would want to wait till I am married becuase I wouldn't want to go through all that alone. So I think it has a good point but I think it also is going to make kids think they can get preg. & be on the show..
first of all im a teen mom and love it ive always wanted kids just not this young but it happens and im not against abortion but i would get one. but teen mom is a show were they just show the drama and the hard times not the good times there are a lot of hard times dont get me wrong but my experince being a teen mom is nothing like theirs on the show
I was a teen mother at the age of 15, and these shows disgust me. I feel the shows inaccurately portray what it is to be a teen mom. At least in my times. I think it is sad that the media has made these girls reality stars. The show focuses on more drama and not the actual day to day functions of motherhood.
The only positive thing about it is it shows semi how it is to have a child young. I'm 17 & I have no intentions of having kids anytime soon & that show reaffirmed it for me, but I think it shows other girls hey I can get pregnant and it's okay because then I'll be on tv & make money.
