I'm not a soldier, or a future soldier. But I have a lot of friends who are active, and from the storys they have told me, it changes your lives. I have personally seen my best friend from since we were 5 years old to now, nearly 21 both of us. When he turned 20 he went in, and he is now skinny skinny man, he is nuts. haha, but I am proud of the decision you are making regardless of who you are! GO YOU!

whats up will, im in the army and actually in Afghanistan as we speak but army basic training really isnt that hard anymore its just all discipline and such. Make sure when you go in you can pass the pt test and your good. You just have to do what your told when your told to do it and wake up super early in the morning to complete the day of the days end. Hardest parts of basic training will be the constant ruck marching and getting used to the early morning physical training routines but the PT will never end even when you graduate basic so do not think that its just basic training. You'll have to remember a lot of stuff when your coming in like the soldiers creed, general orders , etc which to some is kinda hard but its not that bad. Basic training for everyone is all head games you will no longer have a life talk to your family or do anyhting you want to do period so thats the worse part, but get used to it it does not end. You will deploy and go to the field a lot and it just keeps going and going and going and once you do a couple years deployed and do your time in the field in between the deployments youll look back at basic training like it was easy. Basic training is not the end of professionalism and all around soldiering everything that you do in basic you will do as a soldier. Help yourself out prior to basic though learn the soldiers creed will save you some push ups but quit frankly if you cant do push ups right now anyways you need to be doing them period. Any military schools you can go to out of your ait take them for example airborne or air assault or any additional training, take it while you can dont be a wimp schools are hard but good and at the end you'll enjoy what you have. If you have any spacific questions ask I'll have some answer unless its stupid question i'll just give you a stupid answer. take care Will and good luck.

I was part of the military in the 80's and 90's. A female in the Navy. Not much really has changed, except for more hi-tech. The core of the military is strong, as well as its values.  If joining the military, no matter what branch, is in the cards for you, GO for it. Be open minded and don't come to the table with a chip on your shoulder, because you are setting yourself up for failure from the get go.

I wish you the best in your endeavors.  Stay strong and follow your gut!

    Hi Will,

I went through Basic in the late 90s and I have heard it has gotten easier since then even.  The one thing that I tell anyone that is thinking of joining is the mental part is the one thing that kills most people.  If you can handle the mind games and just remind yourself each day that they are purposely breaking you down (or trying to) for a purpose, then just go with the flow and don't let it get to you.  Take things as they come and do what you are told and don't get caught up in trying to get an attitude just cause they have one, it will only make things harder for you :-)  Other than that, study study study the soldier handbook and enjoy the friends you will make cause they will be friends for your lifetime!!!! Good Luck to you.
