two nights ago my family was happy the birth of two kittens. the girls who are eleven came running out to me to tell me that the oldest female in the house had proceeded to have her kittens on thier top bunk. when i came in she had popped out one kitten but the after birthw as still inside. carefully i moved her and the baby to my room where she was able to get the rest of afterbirth out. i helped her making sure that the kittens airways were clear. i detatched the umbilical cord with cotton thread and a pair of scissors. about a half hour later mamma started to push out the seond kitten. i did the same for her. both started nursing and i waited about two more hours to see if mamma had anymore. after which i moved them into the box i had prepared. yesterday morning i awoke to a kittens really loud meow. when i checked on the gray stripped second kitten crying and mamma was trying to clean milk off of the kittens face (i was calling her Venus, because my friend had laid claim to the black boy and named him Titan after Saturns moon) when i checked Venus she appeared to have milk in her mouth and it was coming out her nose. i to tried to help get it out but i wasn't as effective as mamma so i just let her have the kitten back and kept and eye on the situtation. after a while mamma seemed content and i didn't see anymore milk so i let them rest. however during the rest of the day Venus seemed more and more listless and her stomach started to get harder and more swollen. i was hoping that it just meant that she was eating well. I was wrong, very wrong! later in the day i noticed that Venus wasn't attempting to nurse anymore. i picked her up and there was milk in her mouth and nose again. i tried to clear it away and stimulate her to poop. after a little bit she began to meow again and she did have a loose bowl movement. with a feeling of hope i put her back. my friend kept checking her off and on for a while while i took a break. after the kids had all gone to bed and not more than an hour after our last check i went in and discovered mamma with titan nursing and venus was up and away from both of them. i picked her up and she wasn't breathing, she was cold to the touch and a clear filmy liquid had coated her mouth and nose i tried to clear it away and get some breath into her. i tried to see if she could expel any gasses but nothing happened. her stomach was so bloated. after twenty minutes my husband took the lifeless kitten from my hands and told me to give up. there was nothing more i could do.
I have now been keeping my eye on titan who is all black with lighter black stripes on his legs and tail. he is healthy and mamma seems totally devoted to him. my other two females are also pregnant. (i didn't have the money to get them spayed and my appication to the humane society hasn't come through yet) and i am hoping i don't lose anymore of them. please if anybody has any idea what happened to little venus could you let me know?
