Oh, the chocolatey goodness of chocolate milk! Two of my favorite things. Milk. And chocolate.
A July 1st article on WebMD posted that there are some great benefits that "drinking low-fat chocolate milk after a workout helps endurance, builds muscle, reduces fat, and seems to improve performance, according to new research". Why would drinking chocolate milk as opposed to regular milk be beneficial to your workout? John L. Ivy, PhD, department chair of kinesiology and health education at the University of Texas at Austin, describes that the recovery process after exercising includes a replenishment of sugar in the muscle and turning on of protein synthesis and stopping protein breakdown.
If you do opt to have chocolate milk after your workout, look for low-fat or fat-free milk to avoid the extra calories.
