My New Toy. By jsalerno0279.

Posted by robwill Jan 22, 2013

So here is something for all you crazy lock fans. I was I out walking through the flea market & found this, 'medeco High Security Lock Cylinder.'   I was able to pick it up for a couple of bucks so I'm totally stoked.   It's also my first chance to play a Medeco cylinder of my very own.  Coolness!

If you can't tell from the photos, there is pretty much nothing about this lock that does NOT need servicing.  So unfortunately,  I think it's going to have to go into serious lock surgery.   In the mean time enjoy:

A view from the front end:

It's hard to see in the above photo but the key way is pretty dry & the face definitely needs a manufacture approved polish.

From the back it's easier to see the need for a good polishing.  The cam is very stiff & needs lubricating.

Below is a photo of the 6 pin set:

and of course what lock preview would be complete without a 'key against wood grain' photo:

I'm quite perplexed, maybe one of you has an answer.  It looks like an old Yale key.  As you can see in the following picture it clearly says Medeco on the key bow.

To make matters even crazier the guy who sold it to me listed it as a "Schlage."   Maybe someone has an answer feel free to follow up if you know the answer.   In the mean time happy locksmithing.

Yes, I said it.  Real locksmiths wear pink diapers.  I am often asked why I wear a pair of pink diapers dangling from my back pocket.  The truth is; it seems every day I make a new mess my diaper helps protect me from.  A cloth diaper is highly absorbent which makes it great for cleaning up messes locksmiths regularly encounter.  A diaper is ideal for wiping down locks with an excess of WD-40, Lock-Ease, factory polishes or other liquids we use in servicing locks.  Placing a diaper under a lock you are working on is great for catching powdered graphite or sawdust when drilling installation holes.  There are many times a locksmith needs his hands to be clean.  Filling out paperwork, shaking a customer’s hand, or handing a prospective client a business card are just a few important examples.  A diaper is great in a pinch should you need to wipe off grimy hands.  Laying a diaper out can save you from wet, muddy or grass stained knees if you need to kneel down in the dirt to do a job.  Not to mention a diaper makes a nice cushion against rocks or concrete surfaces which can tear pants or possibly scrape fragile knees or legs.  But greasy, grimy, dirty messes are not the only times a locksmith will find a diaper useful.  The absorbent quality of a diaper not only serves to clean up liquids.  I actually prefer using my diaper to a pinning pad when I rekey locks.  A diaper is soft enough not to harm new door hardware,  but if a cylinder spring gets loose, the diaper will absorb spring shock preventing it from bouncing off in every direction.  Loose springs and pins sit tidily on the diaper where they are easily found.  This technique has often saved me the time and embarrassment of having to search all over for wayward springs and top pins.  I often use my diaper to wrap up cylinders, new latches, locksets, or other important tools I need to protect from harm.  It is important to note many petroleum products can cause a diaper to become very flammable.  A dirty diaper full of lubricants and other chemicals should be washed pretty regularly.  This gets me back to why my diaper is pink.  Awhile back I had to clean up some lubricant which turned my diaper a pinkish color.  I think I also further compounded the issue when I mixed my diaper in with some red shop towels.  The crazy color aside, I never cease to find new locksmithing uses for my pink diaper.  It’s for that reason I carry it with me everywhere I go.

February 14th also popularly known as Valentines Day is right around the corner.  This is an important time for locksmiths and security professionals.  Sometimes we have to consider security from a standpoint that the worst intruder can be one who is known to the victim.  As we get closer to Valentines Day many lonely singles will be more likely to welcome strangers into their homes.  In the weeks prior to Valentines Day, online dating sites, nightclubs, single bars and other similar venues will see a rise in business due to people looking to find their special someone. Additionally, delivery services such as the proverbial, "flower guy" or "candy man" are more likely to be anticipated.  So what heartfelt role can a locksmith play in the Valentine season?  I'm glad you asked.  The weeks prior to Valentines Day it is a good time to offer free locksmith or security consultations.  In addition to bringing in clients that need your full services it will help locate some quick business.

#Check Door and Window Frames.

Check to see that door and window frames are not accessible from the outside.  Cracked frames & jambs should be repaired and loose or rusty door and window locks should be replaced.  In the case where windows or patio doors are unprotected consider installing simple window locks as a good measure. At the same time, make sure there are ways to get out if a resident needs to escape a Valentine turned bad.

Install Peep Holes.

Make sure there are adequate peepholes.  This will enable residents visibly inspect and to assure that the person knocking at the door is somebody who is welcome.  If the resident looks through the peephole and sees somebody unwelcome they have the opportunity not to open the door.  In the event the person on the other side of the door is violent, the peephole will add a "temporal barrier" giving the resident extra time to call the authorities for help.

Peepholes are also inexpensive and pointing out that a peephole is needed is usually an easy upsell for a locksmith.  With very little effort a locksmith can point out and quickly install a whole block of peepholes.  For a couple dollars plus the retail cost of the peephole kit the locksmith can generate a great deal of income.

Put Chain Locks on Doors.

Put chain locks on the door will allow a resident to crack the door open to ask questions of people on the other side of the door.  A chain lock will allow a resident to question the delivery guy that shows up, that romantic interest that has suddenly returned, or any other questionable visitor without fully opening the door.

Like peepholes chain locks are inexpensive, an easy upsell, and for the most part require a driver drill and basic knowledge to install.  A great quick sell for the locksmith.

Other Options.

Of course it stands to reason a good locksmith will do a thorough property examination to locate any security loop holes.  Making appropriate determinations about what a clients security needs.  In some case these will require major additions or fixes in others simple add-ons can make a difference.

Offering a free consultation when people are open minded to the need for security can help generate quick income for the locksmith as well as increase safety in the community.  Valentines Season is just such a time when a security need is obvious.  After all, everybody can imagine that no goodnick in a white jump suit and a hand full of flowers coming to do harm or that romantic interest who has returned with intentions of getting something more.  As a security professional, your here to get in the way of those guys.

Be A Casino Locksmith

Posted by Ashworth College Mar 12, 2012

When you think of career opportunities at a casino, a locksmith probably isn't the first one that comes to mind.  In all actuality, the casino locksmith is a key component in what makes the casino run smoothly and continue to be a tourist draw.  According to salary.com, "A casino locksmith is responsible for the maintenance of casino locks and keys. Duplicates keys and replaces and re-keys locks as necessary. A casino locksmith should be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field."

Casino locksmiths are responsible for maintaining the security of the casino itself and all of the vaults and machines.  Making sure the areas where money and chips are kept remains secure is a very important task.

Would you do this?
