Plant a Pizza Garden

Posted by Ashworth College Sep 28, 2011

Landscaping can be a variety of things, including gardening.  Instead of planting flowers and shrubs, however, what about planting something you could actually use?  HGTV came up with a fun idea for a pizza garden.  Not only do you grow ingredients you can use in a real pizza, but the shape of the garden looks like the favorite food itself.  The project is easy and only requires a few steps.

  • First you'll need to get these veggies and design an area big enough for them to grow.
    • tomato: at least 2 feet; for larger varieties, 2-1/2 feet
    • bell pepper: 12 to 15 inches
    • onions: 4 to 5 inches apart
    • basil, rosemary: 15 to 18 inches
    • thyme, oregano: 10 to 12 inches
  • Then install the edges.  A metal structure works well for the outline and using wooden planks separate the "slices."
  • Pick the section you want to drop the plants and with one hand, gently grasp the main stems of each plant, and with the other hand, tip the container upside down and gently squeeze or shake the container until the plant is released.
  • Maintain the garden much like any other, with water and sunlight.  Support will be needed for the tomato plants after they reach a certain height.

Best Trees For Autumn

Posted by Ashworth College Sep 14, 2011

The official start of autumn is next week and with that comes cooler weather, warmer clothing, and the changing of the leaves.  Landscaping is more than just for summer times, your lawn should be beautiful all year round.  When considering landscaping for autumn, what kinds of trees turn the best colors when fall hits?  Here are a few ideas:

  • Sugar Maple: leaves turn very vivid yellow, but works best in the Northeastern United States
  • River Birch: also does not like hot, dry climates
  • Japanese Maple: leaves turn red and orange
  • Bottlebrush Buckeye: Beautiful in every season because it has creamy, off-white spring blooms and golden yellow fall foliage.
  • Ginkgo Autumn Gold
  • Golden Raintree: This plant works in most parts of the country because it doesn't mind heat or drought.  It also has yellow panicle-type flowers in spring and early summer and butter-yellow fall foliage. In the fall, the seed capsules turn pink and peach to orange to red.
  • Black Gum
  • Red Maple
  • Chinese Pistache
  • White Oak

What other trees can you think of that turn beautiful in autumn?

What started off as a joke from a Dutch journalist is catching fanfare as a legitimate idea.  Thijs Zonneveld has always felt that the Netherlands had great landscape to build flat roads and raising cows, but not so much when it came to sports.  His idea was to build a man-made mountain.  Zonneveld writes, "we spend all of our vacations there. We drive to Germany, France and Switzerland." They also go to the mountainous Sauerland region of central Germany to learn how to ski, sometimes making the journey for just a day. Given the effort and expense involved to make such a trip, it stands to reason that the Dutch would also pay to use a mountain in their own country."

Although his idea started off as a funny musing, several people have really caught on to his idea.  The idea of using a mountain for sports and tourism has been thrown around as well as using it to create jobs. An image of the mountain has already been created on google earth and the idea is a big undertaking.  The idea of a 7,000 ft mountain will cost roughly 300 billion euros!

Do you think this is a good idea or do you think altering the landscape this much is insane?
