Pregnancy Causes Complications At The Office

Posted by Ashworth College on Feb 23, 2012 11:34:03 AM

For one New Jersey woman, a complicated pregnancy that almost cost her the baby did end up costing her a job.  Dr. Mary Beamer was pregnant when she developed a severe form of morning sickness that can cause dehydration.  Because of this condition, Mary missed 11 days of work.  After several doctor's visits and a short hospital stay, all of which she had documented evidence of, she called the office to say she was going to be returning.  Instead of being met with open arms, Mary was met with a different reaction.

According to an article by ABC News, the owner of the practice where Mary worked told her, "I don't want you coming back to the office because I don't like how you are running it."

She has now filed a suit citing sex discrimination and wrongful termination.  Her company counter filed and sued her for breach of contract.  Now the equal employment opportunity comission (EEOC) is involved and saying this suit is long overdue.

As an human resources student, what do you think of this situation?
