In the heart of Milwaukee, WI lies one high school that is as different as the students that roam the halls. The Alliance School was set up for middle and high schoolers who were bullied at their previous schools. At this school, over half of the students have come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. Here, it is not uncommon to see boys putting on makeup or two teens of the same sex kissing. "That's not an issue, because it doesn't affect their education," said the principal. There is even have a unisex bathroom so those students that are transgendered don't feel pigeonholed into choosing male or female.
The school claims this program is beneficial to students and for some, having this type of community is a life or death situation. They feel if students have to go back to their original public schools, the students will face harassment and bullying. The director of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) says this school is a Band-Aid solution and once students get out of this protective bubble they won't be used to mean comments or "real life".
Do you think having a high school like this in place is good for the students?
