Ever Widening Gap Between CEO Pay And Average Salaries. - Management And Administration.

The difference between what CEOs get paid as compared to the lowest employees in their company has increased by 1,000 per cent since 1950.

Bloomberg did an extensive study of the annual pay of top executives as compared to their entry-level staff and found that CEOs make on average 204 times the regular salary but the differential is much more striking in certain retail companies.

The biggest offender comes in the form of JC Penney, where their latest CEO Ron Johnson, who was recently fired, left with a $53.3million compensation deal.

That is nearly 1,800 times the $29,688-per-year earned by the department store chain's cashiers.

Some of the biggest differentials appear not in the ledgers of Wall Street banks but in the financial records of companies that are household names.

Though the bonuses may be higher in downtown Manhattan, bigger retail-based companies employ more minimum wage workers, which explains why the gap between the bottom and the top of the ladder can be so great.

JC Penney marked the biggest differential, followed by Abercrombie and Fitch, where CEO Michael Jeffries took in $48.1million in 2012 and an average worker at the clothing chain brought home $29,310 plus benefits.

The baseline salary for financial and technology companies Simon Property Group and Oracle Group were much higher than their retail counterparts- with average workers in each making $86,033 and $74,693 per year respectively.

That said, their CEOs- David Simon and Larry Ellison- both earned much more to boot: Mr Simon made $137.2million and Mr Ellison made $96.2million.

Starbucks comes in fifth place, with the average barista brewing up $25,463 and CEO Howard Schultz making $28.9million.

The company responded to the Bloomberg report, saying: 'Howard's pay reflects both competitive considerations and the unique value of his leadership, demonstrated in our record 2012 results and 38 per cent total shareholder return.'

'Our baristas receive a comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage and company stock for eligible partners, that can be worth up to three times that offered by other retail companies,' Starbucks spokesman James Olsen said.

The differentials between CEO pay and average workers have been released as part of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law in an effort for the public to better understand how companies spend their money.

That said, the differential has been recorded since before the bill passed in 2010, and it shows that the gap has dramatically widened in recent decades.

In 1950, CEOs made 20 times the salary of average workers. The moved up to 42-to-1 in 1980. Then tripled to 120-to-1 in 2000. Now JC Penney stands at 1,795-to-1.
